There are 12 soil types in the United States according to the soil order, the classification system for soil. The 12 types are:

Gelisols: Frozen

Histosols: Organic and wet

Spodosols: Salty and acidic

Andisols: Volcanic ash

Oxisols: Very weathered

Vertisols: They shrink and swell

Aridisols: Very dry

Ultisols: Weathered

Mollisols: Deep and fertile

Alfisols: Moderately weathered

Inceptisols: Slightly developed (young) soil

Entisols: Newly formed soil
