When the Pope refused to grant King Henry VIII a divorce between him and his Spanish wife, King Henry VIII broke England's ties with Catholicism, and thereby established himself head of the Christian faith. This enabled him to then divorce his wife without the approval of a pope, and remarry another woman he had his eyes on.
