Water molecules are attracted to the molecules in the wall of the glass container. Water flows up through vessels because water is sticky due to cohesion and adhesion. Small insects such as the water strider can walk on water because their weight is not enough to penetrate the water's surface.

Answer:

This phenomenon is called Adhesion of water

Explanation: Adhesion is the tendency of dissimilar particles or surfaces to cling to one another. Water will form intermolecular associations with polar and charged molecules. The water molecules are more strongly attracted to the glass than they are to other water molecules (because glass molecules are even more polar than water molecules).
