Once the communists came to power through the revolution of 1917, they established the first Marxist state in the world headed by their leader Lenin. So the Bolsheviks created the Soviet Union and suppressed the titles and privileges that had been made before the February Revolution with which Tsar Nicholas II was overthrown. Additionally, equality between men and women was decreed and the same salary was determined for civil servants and workers. Finally, a very important fact was the separation of the Church and the State and the nationalization of banks and companies.

After the communist party took over, Russia and some countries it controlled were renamed The USSR.

Russia, as a communist state, had a great impact on the rest of the world. Many other countries became communist: China, North Korea and Cuba.

There was a division between communist countries and other countries, such as the USA. This period was known as the Cold War.

The USSR existed as a communist state until 1991.
