As per the Constitution, the U.S. House of Representatives makes and passes federal laws. The House is one of Congress's two chambers (the other is the U.S. Senate), and part of the federal government's legislative branch.

The branch of the government made of two houses, the Senate and the House of Representatives is the Legislative branch. The creation of the two sections of the Congress (bicameral legislature) as well as the powers and limits to the Congress stems from Article 1 of the Constitution.
