Harvard College was founded in 1636 in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the training of clergy. It was established by the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

or in other words ministers.

Harvard College ( presently Harvard University ) was originally founded as "New College", although it was founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1636, which makes it the oldest educational institution in America. It was originally founded to train clergy ministers, then deemed of great need in New England.
