Some northerners object to dividing the Nebraska Territory in two because it would give a chance to slavery to spread to the north of the line established by the Missouri Compromise-

The differences between people that favored slavery and the people who don't, created violent conflicts that derived in what was called "Bleeding Kansas", previous hostilities to the American Civil war.

Stephen A. Douglas proposed to split territories of Nebraska and Kansas to repeal the Missouri Compromise line.
