A total of 414 tickets were sold for the school play. They were either adult tickets or student tickets. The number of student tickets sold was two times the number of adult tickets sold. How many adult tickets were sold?

Let the number of adult tickets be = x

let the number of student tickets be = y

Total tickets are = 414 , equation becomes

`x+y=414` ........(1)

Given is , the number of student tickets sold was two times the number of adult tickets sold, equation becomes

`y=2x` .......(2)

So putting the value of y=2x in equation (1).

`x+2x=414`

`3x=414`

`x=138`

As y=2x

`y=2*138=276`

Hence number of adult tickets sold were = 138
