What makes asbestos dangerous is the fact that it is a fiber that can cause cancer, inflammation of the lungs, and even internal scarring or cuts.
(Fun fact: Asbestos was found in GP-5 gas masks that were created by the Soviet Union, it's always cautioned that when buying a gas mask to make sure the filter doesn't have asbestos mixed with the activated charcoal!)
