You've got two plates of rock coming together. Where they meet, all that rock has to go somewhere. It can't go left or right ... there's already other stuff there. It can't go down ... the rest of the Earth is there. The only place it can go is UP. Gazillions of tons of rock, coming together, and going up. Trust me ... That's not going to create swamps and beaches !
