When the colonists landed on Roanoke Island in July 1587, John White soon returned to England for supplies. Almost three years passed before his return to Roanoke. When he finally got back, the colony had disappeared. Roanoke's fate remains a mystery.

John White left Roanoke to get more provisions for the colonists. He came back three years later to find the colony abandoned and the word "CROATAN" carved into a nearby tree.
