Why did the southern states secede

I believe it was because a Republican, Abraham Lincoln, was elected president. Republicans wanted to stop slavery from spreading. The southern states did not agree on the idea and decided to pull away from the U.S, later creating their own independent republic called the Confederate States of America.

because northern states wanted to make slavery illegal but the sourthern states needed slaves to work on their feilds to pick crops (no one else would pick crops )
