What's the psychological state of captain Davis in roots

Even though he is a devoted catholic, it seems that Davis has been debased by slavery, at the same time being a "moral" character and dehumanizing the slaves; the part where its implied that he rapes a slave girl even though he does not approve of such act shows that he is desensitized to the point where he doesn't consider raping a slave immoral.
