How does water contribute to mechanical weathering?

Water can get trapped and it can either freeze or boil. This can cause rock to expand from heat or contract from cold. It also can create streams and rivers that cause rocks to collide and wear down. Ice also is a form of water which will get into small cracks in rocks, get trapped, and then expand.

Hope this helps.
