Waves are generally formed in the ocean due to the wind. They are also considered as the wind-driven waves or the surface waves. The basic phenomenon here is that when the wind blows over the surface of the ocean, it creates a friction between the wind and the upper surface of the ocean, as a result of which these waves are generated.

These waves are important as it plays a significant role in the occurrence of weather conditions at different places.

Some waves are also generated due to the gravitational attraction or pull of the sun as well as the moon.
