Why do females have periods?

Females have periods because, every month the lining of a womans uterus because very thick. Once an unfertle egg reaches the unterine wall, the egg sit's there for day's. If the egg doesn't get fertilized, the lining in the uterus sheds. Which causes a period/cycle. Which occurs monthly.
