When the Glen Canyon dam was finished in the year 1963, its waters, which were averted from the Colorado River, began to fil the body of water that is known as Lake Powell. This artificial lake was named after John Wesley Powell, who explored the Corolardo river at the time of the American Civil War. Lake Powell first attained the level of 3 700 feet in the year 1980, having taken eleven years to fill.
