1- United States v. Alfonso D. Lopez, Jr., 514 U.S. 549, was the first United States Supreme Court case since the New Deal to set limits to Congress' power under the Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution.

2-Lopez appealed his conviction to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which reversed on the issue of congressionalauthority. It ruled that the law was invalid because it went beyond the powers of Congress under the commerce clause.
