We know the now Tom has 16 comic books, but the sentence before showed that he bought 9 more comic books, so
16 - 9 (because we can figure out the first problem)
= 7
Then since it says that he sold half,
7 times 2
= 14
So Tom had 14 comic books to begin with
:)
