Edward feels compassion towards his congregation.

In this doctrine, Edwards's purpose is to teach his audience the fears of hell and the hazards of sin, in order to make them fearful of God and not to commit sins, which will save them from hell. He is compassionate because he wants to save his congregation from eternal doom, even if he does it in a frightening way.
