If you had liter container full of marbles and a half liter container full of sand, would a mixture of two measure 1 1/2 liters? Why or why not?

No, because the sand would go through the holes. Marbles are circles and circles don’t fit perfectly together, so there would be holes in between the marbles, it would not be 1 1/2 liters.
