Why did Henry Hudson make so many voyages?

He was trying to make a shorter route to Asia from Europe and while sailing he three waterways that are now named after him: The Hudson River, Hudson Bay, and The Hudson Strait.

He was searching for the northwest passage as when he couldn’t find it he kept looking and eventually ended up at the Hudson Bay
