First add 8 to both sides of the equation. That will cancel out the - 8 and the 4 will turn into a 12. Then you have to divide 3 by both sides of the equation in order to get x by itself. When you divide 3x by 3x, it will just be left as x, and when you divide 12 by 3x you get 4. So x = 4.
