Mogul officials called "zamindars" kept a portion of the taxes paid by peasants as their salaries.

Zamindar literally means the one who holds the land (Zamin meaning land and “Dar” the one who keeps/holds). Amid the Mughal Domain; Zamindars had a place with the respectability and were part of the decision class. Their tribal spaces were treated as jagirs (properties). Under English colonial control in India, the permanent settlement united what ended up known as the zamindari framework.
