What is the theme of not waving but drowning?

This poem contains many themes. One such theme would be isolation. He is on his own and out of reach, both metophysically and physically. He does not have anyone there to throw him a life vest when things get tough. Even worse is the fact that death makes him lose all hope of ever reconnecting with someone, instead he is left alone, in isolation for the rest of his life.
