The British official appointed by the king to rule over a royal colony was "Royal Governor".

English rule in the settlements was authorized by the colonial governor. He was normally named by the Ruler and he filled in as the central law authorization officer in the settlement. The governor appeared to be the most powerful. Yet, the royal governors frequently met determined opposition from provincial congregations.
