What irony is in the story the gift of the magi and how does it affect the reader

The irony in the story was that even though both characters got something for the other person item that they gave away and vice versa, they were actually the smart ones in their lovingness, and this relates to the reader, because it develops the theme of heartfelt care and giving from the heart.
