The group of people that had more reason to resist the Tea Act of 1773 were the colonial tea merchants, because the Tea Act allowed the British East India Company to sell its tea in the Thirteen Colonies of North America without paying taxes, harming the colonial merchants, who had to pay the taxes.

The Tea Act was enacted to try to relaunch the Company, which was in a serious crisis, giving it a monopolistic place in British commerce.

As a result, a boycott of British tea by the colonists of the Thirteen Colonies began, culminating in the Boston Tea Party.
