For the first five legs of a bicycle race, Elena was 32 second,5 second,10 seconds, 8 seconds, and 12 seconds behind the leader. What was the average time she was behind the leader?

Answer: Hello there!

if you have n numbers, x₁, x₂, .... , xₙ

The mean or average of this numbers is X = (x₁ + x₂ + ..... + xₙ)/n

now in this problem we have 5 numbers: 32s, 5s, 10s, 8s and 12s

then the mean of these numbers is:


X = (32s+ 5s +10s+8s+12s)/(5) = (57s)/(5) = 11.4s

The average time (per leap) that she was behind the leader is 11.4 seconds.
