The House of Burgesses was a representative body created for Virginia. It was the first governing body of the British colonies.

the House of Burgesses contained a legislative body with representatives as well as a governor. Each Virginia settlement sent representatives to the legislative body. They were responsible for creating laws for the Virginia colony. Representatives were limited to landowning men but would be a model for the US government.
