What does the principe of competitive exclusion say will happen when two species compete for the same resource

The theory states that when two species compete for the same resources, one of the species will be eliminated from the habitat. Usually, the species with the slight advantage over the other, in the competition for the resources wins. However, there is always the chance for adaptation such that both species partition the resource and curve their niches hence reduce competition. Both species survive in this case
