The process also involved embalmment where the body was surgically opened, dehydrated and stuffed with spices and herbs. This practice was popular in Ancient Egypt where the bodies of emperors and other eminent persons were preserved by wrapping the corpses in bandages that were treated in herbs that had antimicrobial and waterproofing properties.
