The idea that a behavior will increase or decrease based on the consequences that follow that behavior is crucial to operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is a method of learning in which behaviors are emitted to earn rewards or avoid punishments. Skinner defined operant conditioning in 1938. He stated that behavior that is followed by pleasant consequences is likely to be repeated. Behavior followed by unpleasant consequences on the other hand is less likely to be repeated.
