J is between H and K. If HJ = 2x + 5, JK = 3x - 7, and KH = 18, find the value of x

We know that HJ + JK = HK

So lets substitute each part for their equation.

(2x + 5) + (3x - 7) = 18

Combine like terms

5x -2 = 18

Add 2 to both sides to eliminate it

5x = 20

Divide both sides by 5

x = 4
