Many people say that for every dollar you earn, you really make only 70 cents. If your gross pay is $1000 for a summer job, then how much is your net pay?

70 cents is the same as 70% of a dollar. To find 70% of 1000, you multiply by .7.

.7 x 1000 = 700

This is my understanding of the problem.

Your net pay is $700 because $300 is the portion of your pay that gets taken away.
