Why do authors use symbols? Why not just state exactly what they mean?

it's quite simple, When you are a writer, you need to be artistic and innovative, like, for example, a word "chain" may stand for "union" or "imprisonment", The symbolism of "chain" represents something different than its literal meaning, which gives a story, poem or any other writing form a different perspective and food for thought.
