The arabesques refers to the ornament of vegetal geometric figures and extravagant patterns that mimic shapes of leaves, flowers, fruits, ribbons, animals, and almost always appear on the walls of certain Arab constructions, such as mosques considered as a pictorial art.

Examples of decoration with arabesque are the Mihrab of the Mosque of Cordoba or the Alhambra of Granada. It was also used in Mudejar art, as can be seen on the facade of the palace of Pedro I, of the Alcazar of Seville.

However, the arabesque is much older than Islamic art. It appears in Egyptian and Assyrian monuments; also in some Etruscans, Greeks and Romans. In the Middle Ages, it was used in all kinds of ornaments, and in the Renaissance it was widely used in Italy.
