Which best describes Marcus' tone in this excerpt from Little Brother?

Mom gave me a long hug, and I noticed how thin her arms had gotten, how saggy the skin on her neck was. I always thought of my mother as young, pale, rosy-cheeked and cheerful, peering shrewdly through her metal-rim glasses. Now she looked a little like an old woman. I had done that to her. The terrorists had done that to her. The Department of Homeland Security had done that to her.

Answer: remorseful

We can see that the story is speaking about him being sorry, which it's obvious that it's not being said within the story it's self, but, for sure that's what it's trying to bring out.

remorseful is your best answer

"remorseful" means "filled with remorse, sorry". Even though it is not said, it is implied that he is sorry, because he thinks back to the history of how his mom ended up like that.

hope this helps
