Thousands of fortune-seekers streamed to California in 1849 because of the Gold Rush in northern California, which actually began on January 4, 1849. James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma California. News of the gold brought approximately 300,000 gold-seekers. This caused California to grow into the state it is today.
