The native inhabitants of colonists were the various tribes of the Wampanoag people like Squanto one of the Wampanoags. He taught the colonists how to plant corn, and where to catch fish. He also acted as an interpreter, which helped keep peace between the Native Americans and the colonists. He was able to communicate well with colonists because he spoke fluent English, unlike most of his fellow Native-Americans at the time.
