The main political cause of the American revolution is what was considered as taxation without representation. The British government decided to make the American colonies pay a large share of the war debt from the French and Indian War. These included the the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, and other taxes that the American people considered harsh. The Sugar Act hurt the New England Merchants because they were required to pay more. It was the first tax on the American colonies imposed by the British Parliament
