Energy needed for cellular function comes from the "burning" or oxidation of glucose, fats, and protein.
Oxidation is a type of reaction in which there is loss of electrons during a reaction by a molecule, atom or ion. Oxidation takes place when the oxidation state of a molecule is increased and it causes the molecule to change rapidly or slowly due to of the addition of oxygen.
