The Atlantic slave trade was defined as the selling of African slaves by Europeans. It happened in and around the Atlantic Ocean that is why it was termed as Atlantic slave. The slaves were shipped from West Africa and brought to the New World on slave ships for working on plantations. These slaves were needed to work so as to boost the plantation economy that was very vast at that time.

The crops that these slaves grew were known as cash crops and they included- cotton, sugarcane, figs, tobacco, tea, palm oil etc.
