Because it is. To be able to define it

It is necessary to recheck the starting volume of liquid before each object is put in because it would ruin the experiment.

Why?

If you put each object in before rechecking the starting volume, you won't know the difference between what the liquid weighs and how much each item weighs. You'd need to be able to differentiate between the two.
