Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) was a landmark decision of the U. S. Supreme Court. The decision upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation laws as long as the facilities provided to Black Americans were equal in quality ("separate, but equal"). This decision is now regarded as one of the worst ones in U. S. history. It continued to restrict the civil rights of Black Americans and encouraged racial segregation.
