What conditions must be present before a solute can diffuse across a membrane?

First of all, the membrane must be permeable to the solute for the diffusion to occur. The second thing is that diffusion requires unequal concentrations of the solute on either side of the membrane (solute will diffuse from the compartment where its concentration is higher).
