Most Englishmen who visited North America in the 1500s were Privateers.
Privateers were in the strict sense of the word sailors, but they were independent sailors who did not belong to any formal or royal navy force. That practice became popular when the “discovery fever” struck Europe and the countries needed men to fight to protect their colony lands or to take more colonies. Privateers were more like “water mercenaries” than any other thing.
