In criminal justice, especially in North America, improvement, corrections, and correctional, are important terms representing the variety of purposes typically conducted out by government agencies which concern the punishment, execution, and guidance of persons who have been convicted of crimes.
These duties generally involve confinement, parole, and punishment. A standard correctional institute is a prison. A correctional system, also identified as a penal system, thus refers to a chain of agencies which determine a jurisdiction's jails and community-based programs like probation boards and parole. This practice is composed of the broader criminal justice system, which involves the prosecution, police, and courts.
