Intracellular deposits of keratin make the stratified squamous epithelium waterproof and friction resistant.

The outer of the skin consists of dead cells called keratinocytes. They contain no nucleus or cytoplasm, but they are rich in keratin.

Keratin is the protein that make the hair, skin, and nails resistant to water and friction.
