When a metal piece is dropped into water, the volume of water level increases. The increased volume of water is equivalent to volume of the metal piece. Also, density of any substance is mass per unit volume,so, the density of the metal piece can be calculated by dropping it in a known amount of water and measuring how much amount of water rises. The increased volume of water is equivalent to volume of the metal piece.

Before dropping metal piece into water volume of water was 22.77 ml and after dropping the metal into water the water level rises to 28.49 ml. Rise of volume of water= (28.49 - 22.77) ml= 5.72 ml

So, volume of metal piece is 5.72 ml and mass of metal piece is 56.15 g. So- density of metal piece= mass of metal/rise in volume of water= (56.15/5.72) g/ml=9.81 g/ml=9.81 g/cm³.
